When should I launch my new shoe brand?
If you have been waiting for the “right time” to start your footwear project, here is the truth: the right time is now.
It is easy to look around at global uncertainty, economic shifts, political noise, supply chain concerns, and international conflict and think, “Maybe I should wait.” But footwear development does not happen overnight. From the first idea to a finished product ready to launch, the process can take a year, 18 months, or even close to two years depending on the complexity of the project.
That means if you wait until the market looks perfect, you may already be too late.
The key is to think ahead. If you want your footwear brand to launch when consumer confidence returns and business is moving again, you need to begin development before that moment arrives. When the economy turns around, that should be your launch window — not your starting point.
A complete footwear development timeline includes product briefs, design, sampling, revisions, costing, production planning, sales samples, booking windows, order confirmations, manufacturing, and shipping. Production alone can take 90 to 120 days, and shipping may add another four to six weeks. For larger seasonal launches, especially brands working across spring, summer, fall, and holiday introductions, an 18-month schedule is not unusual.
Smaller entrepreneurial brands may be able to move faster, but even then, proper planning is essential. You still need to understand when money is required, what each stage costs, how long development takes, and how to show investors or partners that you have a real plan.
The brands that prepare during slow or uncertain times are often the ones best positioned when the market opens up again. During COVID, some companies kept building while others paused. When restrictions lifted and business returned, those prepared brands were ready to move.
If you have a footwear idea in your head, do not let uncertainty keep you on the sidelines. Start building your development schedule. Clarify your concept. Understand your production timeline. Figure out where your product should be made and what resources you need.
At Shoemakers Academy, we help new and established brands turn ideas into real footwear products. Whether you are launching your first shoe brand or expanding into a new product category, now is the time to start planning.
Because when the market is ready, your product should be ready too.
