Footwear Project Review

A 10-Point Professional Review of Your Shoe Project

Get an expert assessment of your footwear project before costly mistakes become expensive problems.

Whether you are developing your first shoe, working through sample problems, preparing for production, or trying to get a stalled project back on track, the Shoemakers Academy Footwear Project Review gives you direct access to real-world footwear development expertise.

During your private project review, we examine your project from concept through production readiness and identify the issues, risks, and next steps that deserve your attention.

1. Product Concept & Project Goals

We start by reviewing exactly what you are trying to create.

We look at your target customer, product category, intended use, key features, retail positioning, and overall objectives to make sure the project has a clear and realistic direction.

Key question: Do you have a clearly defined product that can realistically be developed and manufactured?

2. Shoe Design Review

We review your sketches, renderings, reference samples, CAD drawings, or other design materials.

The goal is to identify missing information, potential construction issues, and design features that may cause problems during development.

Key question: Is your design detailed enough for a footwear developer or factory to understand and build?

3. Last, Fit & Sizing Strategy

Every successful shoe project needs the correct foundation.

We review your footwear last requirements, sizing strategy, intended fit, and any special comfort or performance requirements.

If you do not yet have a last, we discuss the best path forward.

Key question: Do you have the correct last and fit strategy for your product and customer?

4. Materials & Construction

We evaluate your proposed upper materials, linings, reinforcements, cushioning, outsole construction, components, and assembly methods.

Potential material, durability, manufacturability, or sourcing problems can often be identified before expensive samples or tooling are ordered.

Key question: Are the proposed materials and construction appropriate for the product?

5. Tooling & Technical Requirements

We identify the tooling and technical development your project may require.

This can include outsole molds, midsoles, footbeds, molded components, special hardware, patterns, dies, or other development work.

Key question: What tooling will be required, and has the cost and development time been considered?

6. Target Cost & Retail Price

A great-looking shoe still needs to work financially.

We review your expected factory price, target retail price, materials, construction, packaging, transportation, duty, and other factors that can influence product cost.

Where appropriate, we identify areas that may need to change to meet your target.

Key question: Can this shoe realistically be manufactured at a cost that supports your business model?

7. Factory & Sourcing Readiness

Not every shoe factory is right for every shoe project.

We review your current factory or sourcing strategy and consider whether the supplier has the capabilities, equipment, technical expertise, minimum order requirements, and communication skills your project requires.

If you do not have a factory yet, we identify what type of manufacturing partner you should be looking for.

Key question: Do you have the right factory and suppliers for this particular product?

8. Development Status & Production Readiness

We examine where your project currently stands in the development process.

Designs, tech packs, samples, specifications, corrections, fit testing, wear testing, costing, colorways, packaging, and production approvals may all be considered.

We identify what is complete, what is missing, and what needs additional work.

Key question: Is your project genuinely ready for the next stage?

9. Timeline, Budget & Risk Review

Footwear projects can quickly lose time and money when technical problems are discovered too late.

We review your proposed schedule, development budget, tooling requirements, sample rounds, factory lead times, and production expectations to identify potential roadblocks.

Key question: What could delay the project, increase costs, or prevent a successful launch?

10. Recommended Next Steps

The review concludes by prioritizing the actions that will move your project forward.

We identify the most important problems to solve, decisions to make, information to obtain, and development steps to complete.

Instead of wondering what to do next, you leave the review with a clearer direction for your footwear project.

Key question: What should you do next—and in what order?

The Shoe Dog would like to tell you about the Footwear Start-Up Project review.

Most Important Question

Before the meeting, complete this sentence:

“The most important thing I need help with right now is ______________________________.”

This helps us focus the review on the issues that will have the greatest impact on your project.

Remember

Your project does not need to be perfect or production-ready before the meeting.

The purpose of the Footwear Project Review is to identify what is working, what may be missing, where the risks are, and what you should do next.

Come prepared with your project. Leave with a clearer plan.
