What's in this course?
In this first lesson, Erik walks you through how to organize and inventory the parts needed to build your Air Jordan 1 High. You’ll need various tools to complete the DIY project. Begin by separating the pattern parts by their materials and trace them to ensure you have enough. Organize them accordingly and lay them out following the pattern. Erik guides you through how to adjust the pattern to suit your build preferences. He then proceeds to cut out the shoe parts using scissors and razor blade techniques, including adding toe lasting allowance to the pattern.
Erik explains the importance of skiving the edges of leather parts and demonstrates which parts need skiving. He then cuts, perforates, and skives the Air Jordan 1 Retro High parts. Additionally, Erik applies reinforcements and backing to the upper parts.
Erik leads you step-by-step through the sewing and assembly processes, focusing on attaching the inner lining to the collar. This process, which may seem complex, is thoroughly explained.
Erik constructs the toe tip, vamp, and tongue assembly by gluing and sewing the parts together. He also attaches the tongue logos and then combines the vamp assembly with the quarters.
The completed upper is prepared for lasting. Erik demonstrates how to hand last it, explaining the required tools and techniques. He also guides you through the toe box assembly process, including cutting and forming reinforcements and the proper application of craft glue. Erik then returns the upper to the lasting post, completes the box area, and smooths the upper with a hammer, removing lasting nails and trimming the lasting margin.
Erik presents two techniques for outsole corking: cork sheet and chopped cork filler. Erik demonstrates finishing the cork with bottom sanding. This ensures the upper lasting margin is flat. He then sands the outsole and dry fits the parts together. Erik then marks the upper with the outsole and sands the bonding margin, he dry fits again to ensure the proper fit before applying sole glue.
In the final lesson, Erik explains the outsole bonding process and demonstrates how to apply the sole to the upper. He performs outsole pressing operations, removes the shoe from the last, and showcases outsole stitching with a channel stitch marking. Erik also reveals a special DIY tool for stitching and completes the operation. Finally, he finishes by reshaping the upper with a hammer, cleaning up, installing footbeds, and adding laces to complete the build process.
