The toe puff is a thin plastic or leather reinforcement used to stiffen the upper in the vamp or toe tip area of the shoe. The toe puff is also called the toe counter or toe tip reinforcement. The toe counter or toe tip sets the shape of the shoe, builds space for the human foot, and protects the toes from bumps. The tour counter will also prevent the user's toe nail from damaging the inside of the shoe.
Running shoes will have softer toe counters, while hiking boots, work boots, and military boots will have stiffer plastic or metal toe counters.
