Ghillie is the name of a dance shoe used in Scotland and Ireland for traditional Highland and Irish dancing. The criss-cross, and cross-ankle lacing, which is used on both soft shoes and brogues for dancing purposes, has made its way into men’s and women’s fashion shoes.

Nike introduced the Ghillie lace loop into athletic footwear with the 1995 Air Max. The athletic Ghillie is made of nylon webbing or folded synthetic leather. The Ghillie lace loop is now a common construction.
